West Sussex

Bordering Hampshire to the west, to the east (with Brighton and Hove) East Sussex, to the south the English Channel, and to the north Surrey, West Sussex is in England's south. The city in West Sussex, Chichester is the county town in the south-west and the largest towns are Crawley, Worthing and Horsham.

Transferred into West Sussex was a large part of Lewes eastern rape (the district of Mid Sussex which includes East Grinstead, Burgess Hill, and Haywards Heath towns). Near the M23/A23, either in Mid Sussex or along the south coast, are most settlements in West Sussex.

Hampshire to west, Surrey to north and East Sussex to east border West Sussex. Along with neighbours, West Sussex developed distinctive land uses in the weald. Although it has no railway stations, the Direct Line at Portsmouth serves and enters West Sussex's part that is westernmost.

With ridges along the border with Surrey including the highest point of the county at Blackdown, in West Sussex the exposed earth becomes older towards the north.
